Fantasy World, Real Startup - Helga Árnadóttir & Signý Kolbeinsdóttir of Tulipop

Being on an island in the middle of the Atlantic might present disadvantages to anyone starting a product-focused business… unless your’e an Icelander. In another example of true Icelandic grit, entrepreneurs Helga Árnadóttir and Signý Kolbeinsdóttir have created an international brand that spans oceans, in spite of the ocean. Tulipop is a fantasy world of children’s characters and real-life products invented by Signý and brought to market by Helga.

They’ve come a long way in solving the logistical challenges of manufacturing and shipping overseas by forging relationships with international manufacturers. Simultaneously, they’ve met the complicated artistic and technical demands of designing physical products based on two-dimensional characters. All the while, the rich, creative world of Tulipop continues to be expanded, to the delight of children everywhere.

They’ve got some challenges ahead, of course; for example, expanding into the U.S. market will require a whole new battery of product tests and import requirements. For now, their growth is focused in Iceland and Europe, where they’ve already been through that gauntlet. They’re working on ideas for apps, books, and even a cartoon show to bring Tulipop to new markets around the globe.

Their productivity and speedy success a shining example of the Icelandic work ethic… but Signý and Helga are also having a ridiculous amount of fun doing what they’re doing. It can’t be too difficult to get out of bed when your work is to make children (and parents) happy. We were delighted to meet them at this year’s Startup Iceland, and we look forward to hearing of more success at the next one!
