GPS / BLE App Startup - Steinunn Gunnlaugsdóttir of Locatify

It may be hard for mere mortals to imagine that behind the polished interface and mature technology of Locatify are ordinary (albeit brilliant) startup founders combatting the forces of startup chaos. But we here at Startup Chronicle know better, and we wanted the dirt on Locatify. We recently cornered Locatify’s Steinunn Anna Gunnlaugsdóttir at Startup Iceland to dish about her growing company.

We learned that Locatify’s broad flexibility was a built-in feature of their core technology from the get-go. It’s allowed users to create both indoor (Bluetooth) or outdoor (GPS) location-based guides and games with comparable ease.SmartGuide and TurfHunt, both content-rich standalone apps, are essentially really cool examples of what users can create for themselves with Locatify’s CMS solution. Check out their website for more info.

Like many Iceland-based startups, Locatify rose from the ashes of the 2008/9 financial crisis. Since 2009, the company has successfully weathered delays and budgetary crisis, all the while perfecting its product. It’s now ready to “take off,” according to Steinunn.

How was Steinunn’s team able to survive for four years where so many other startups might have faltered? Good ol’ fashioned doing-whatever-it-takes. “We’ve had to take on other projects in order to finance our vision,” Steinunn tells us. “That’s created a delay of what we really want to do. But we’ve always come back to the right road again. So we’re on track to where we want to go.”

They’re also being well cared-for by Iceland’s multi-sector startup support community. “We’ve gotten help from the entrepreneurial association in Iceland,” she says. “We don’t pay a lot of rent because it’s governmentally funded …and they help us any way they can.”

The entrepreneurs sharing her subsidized office space have been generous with their support. “You get the connections with being around other entrepreneurs. And you can get information and new ideas from them. It’s good to be able to throw your ideas at someone and get some feedback, and you can do that in this community.”

The Locatify team is now fine-tuning its marketing strategy in preparation for a worldwide launch. Steinunn seems confident that it’ll be a hit, given their recent successes. “We were opening in a museum a week ago,” she tells us. “People were so thrilled. For me to be there, watching people using our products… that’s something that’s magnificent, to see the products used, and the reactions of the people who are using them.”
